Ian Locke is a performer, director, and playwright hailing from Elmastukwek (the Bay of Islands), Newfoundland, graduating with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts (Theatre - Performance) from Grenfell Campus, Memorial University (2016). In 2020, Locke attended the Broadway Teachers Workshop (New York City), completing numerous sessions with industry professionals. In the province, Ian has worked with numerous companies, including Camber Arts, Opera on the Avalon, Theatre Newfoundland-Labrador, Stage West Theatre Festival, Hard Ticket Theatre,  Wintertide Chamber Music Festival & Off-Broadway Players. Selected highlights include Phantom of the Opera (OotA), Blood Brothers, RENT (OBP), The Anger in Ernest & Ernestine (Stage West), & King of Broadway, Lucy Duhart’s West Side Saloon, Flair (CA). In 2011, Locke Locke was a member of the Youth Theatre Island Exchange Project, touring With Cruel Times In Between to Tasmania, Australia during the 10 Days on the Island Festival. He can also be seen in short films Emile’s Legacy, High Alert, Shanawdithit: A Beothuk Story (CNA Productions) & Crossroads (CRK Films).

 

As a writer, Locke has created memorable site-specific experiences, having written numerous productions taking place on and around the historic Newfie Bullet. In 2017, his original play Postcards from the Train received the Achievement of Community Excellence Award for Best Historic Project; also in 2017, Locke was awarded the opportunity to create an original play for the McIvers Come Home Year celebration. In 2021, Locke was commissioned by Camber Arts & the City of Corner Brook in writing an original musical, alongside Bridget Swift – Barley Legge & The Logger’s Dream, which took place along the Corner Brook Stream Trail. Along with this, Ian developed Blood on the Newfie Bullet, an interactive murder mystery, which sold out for two summers aboard the Historic Train Site.

 

Locke is a community television regular, producing and hosting his own show - The Stage Door on Rogers Corner Brook, highlighting the artistic events within our beautiful region. Locke has also produced and curated a series of musical theatre revues at the Rotary Arts Centre, along with more recently producing a series of musical theatre cabarets at 110 Humber Road.

 

Ian Locke has been a proud faculty member for Graham Academy since its inception in 2016, and it has been the highlight of his career to work and grow with this company to become Camber Arts’ first Artistic Associate in 2020. Ian’s teaching encourages young performers to find their own sparkle, and to healthily grow as dynamic young artists in a safe space. In 2022, Locke was honoured in Open The Window: A Nationwide Celebration of Arts Education & Musical Theatre for his work and dedication to the Graham Academy throughout the pandemic. Locke has created numerous workshops for youth at Regional & Provincial High School Drama Festivals, the National Boychoir of Canada, and the Provincial Drama Society’s Drama Festival, along with directing numerous productions for schools around the region, including Templeton Academy, Corner Brook Intermediate, & Immaculate Heart of Mary School.
